What’s in a number?

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

So as I was surfing around the net, watching “The 4400″, great show by the way, a popup window appeared with an IQ test in it. Now generally I prefer to stay away from those sorts of things since they end up flooding your inbox with a ton of junkmail from the various spammers that support these guys financially. This time though, I decided to go through the test….

It was kind of fun, the questions were the normal, but interesting, what comes next in the series, which doesn’t belong in the group, matt and jane left the station going in opposite directions at varying speeds kind of stuff.

Of course they give you the number for free, but if you want more then you have to pay — not interested in paying for that, but the number was interesting. Of course, as the theme of this entry asks, what’s in a number? Does a low, middle, or high score on an IQ test really indicate how intelligent I am, or how successful I will be in the world ? No.

There are smart smart people out there that are very very lazy — they are not generally successful. There are nimrods out there that are the hardest working people that you will ever find. They can succeed despite being slower.

I think it goes back to the “heredity vs. environment” experiment. Is a person shaped more by thier environment or by thier heredity. Am I smart/dumb becuase my parents where? or is it because my environment dumbed me down or smartened me up?

Anyway – who knows. The IQ numbers that “they” put out are interesting to take note of though.
IQ Description % of Population

130+ Very superior 2.2%
120-129 Superior 6.7%
110-119 High average 16.1%
90-109 Average 50%
80-89 Low average 16.1%
70-79 Borderline 6.7%
Below 70 Extremely low 2.2%

I think by borderline they mean – maybe an audience member of Oprah or maybe just a DMV employee. Just kidding.

Anyway, it was an interesting look into how “they” view my Intelligence Quotient. I am not going to post my number since it would only serve to either embarrass or proclaim my incredible mediocrity or just be pretentious. I would prefer not to do any of those things.
