WOOO HOOOO!!!!

Friday, March 24th, 2006

So we’re sitting at the house tonight watching the tube, when a friend of ours called — now that phone call was fairly meaningless. Questions about some party this weekend.

Of course, because of that call, Laura remembered to check the messages on the machine. One of the messages was from our Home Study Agency, Partner’s for Adoption, — drum roll please….

Our I-171H form has ARRIVED!!!!

Well they got a copy anyway – we haven’t gotten anything yet, but since they got a copy, we will be getting our official copy tomorrow or Monday…

WOW!!! So exciting. Very happy tonight.. :)

I-600A form and Fingerprinting

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

Yippee!

This is the sound that my wife makes when we receive mail from the US Department of Justice. In case any of you were wondering.

That sound is not because we are being contacted by the DOJ, but because that contact is to inform us that they have received and processed our I-600A and our Home Study and that they request that we go to a local office to get fingerprinted.

For those of you not adopting, this is another milestone. We have had to wait for 2 1/2 months to get this. Which is not too bad considering that we filed our form during the holidays. From the way it sounds, if I had filed about a week sooner, we would have had our fingerprinting appt about 1 week later, back in December. Well , that is just the way it goes some times.

Anyway – we are going today to get our fingerprints taken at the federal level. Normally this would scare me, but we are one step closer to our daughter and therefore I only feel excitement.

Oh yeah, and Laura has already called me a few times to remind me when the fingerprinting opens, when it closes, that they may be at lunch around noon…. just kidding, but she is obviously excited as well.

I popped the clutch … so to speak

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

Ever been driving down the road, with a manual, and popped the clutch and the cars stalls…. That is what I have done to our adoption process.

You may have been wondering where we have been, and why we have not been posting, and when I say we, I mean me, since Laura has posted on here once — hmmm, hint hint.

Basically, we are still waiting on our Home Study report, we are waiting on our fingerprinting appointment, which I do not imagine will come until after the HS has been submitted and we are waiting on some paper work to get done for the dossier.

We also submitted a grip of paperwork to the agency which has kindly asked that we redo some of it. OK — so we have to have our medical paperwork redone since the doctor did not completely fill the form out. Hmmmm, I distinctly remember asking him to do that completely.

It is really not a big deal since right now, we can not move forward anyway. We have had some unexpected financial things arise and we promised ourselves we were not going to take loans out in order to keep the adoption process going, so we are on the side of the road waiting for triple A.

Anyway — for now, everything is slightly on hold. Nothing major, hopefully just a few weeks or a month and we will back in the race getting it done.

I-600A form

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

WE finally got to a point where we felt comfortable submitting this form to the USCIS. They cashed our check for 685.00, so I assume that means that we are currently being processed by them.

I am hopeful for a quick turnaround as I have heard of a couple of people in the last couple of weeks getting 10 days or less turn around. I figure it will be at least after the 1st of the year though.

We are also waiting on the home study which will slow tthe processing down a little. I hope we see that by the end of the week, but this is a busy time of the year, so I am not getting too stressed about things coming or not, since most people are less occupied with work.

We have also compiled our dossier paperwork and we are sending that off to the Agency today. Woo hoo. We still need some passport photos and lifestyle photos. We also need to get Laura birth certificate that we ordered a few weeks ago.

Anyway — so much to do, so little time…

December 2nd – coming soon…..

Thursday, November 24th, 2005

Coming On December 2nd, we have our final Home Study visit — the dreaded “come to the house” visit. I am not too concerned about it, but of course there is a biut of nervousness surrounding the event. Christi seems very nice though and I know that she will work hard to help us get through it as painlessly as possible.

I just got back from a 10 day business/personal trip in Chicago, IL and Blue Earth, MN. The personal part was 4 days in Blue Earth seeing old friends. It was a very very long trip, but nice to see old friends again, and even relaxing — at least while I was in MN.

Anyway – we also got our document gathering kit from the Agency this week, A LOT of stuff needed. More on the medical front, all the certs showing we were born and married, and of course enough financial documents too sink a ship.

Moving forward …. ever slowly pressing on. :)

Contracts and Stuff

Saturday, September 3rd, 2005

The contracts have been read and signed. We filled out all the other paperwork that the adoption agency sent.

We got a fed-ex account. The agency recommended that so we could expedite all the paperwork – both ways.

We have rustled up 700.00 for the adoption agency program fee.

Everything is all ready to be packed up in a fed-ex envelope and will be put in the box on Tuesday. Wednesday morning they will all arrive at the agency.

By this time next week, we should be “officially” in the program and the ball will be rolling.

I have also sent in a request for our marriage license. The nice, actually very nice, woman from the Lyon County courthouse was most helpful in getting that process going. Most everywhere i looked online required that we notarize the request, but she told me to put it to her attention and no notary would be required. I guess request made direct the courthouse do not require notary. At least that saves us 20.00.

The request for the birth certificates will not be so easy though. Vital Check is where we are ordering them from, and of course they require notary. I believe, since 9/11, all birth certificate request require that now.

I believe that the paper pregnancy has officially begun. Am I showing? :)

We’re Approved!

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

YAH!

Not that I was concerned at all that they would not accept our application since it was just a preliminary, but this afternoon, we got our very first packet from Americans Adopting Orphans. It has the contract and some other information, with tips on what we can be doing now to speed the process along.

Now, we have to rustle up our 700.00 for the program fee and sign the contracts and we will be on our way. The ball is definitely rolling though.

I’m excited again. I read a really great post on one the of the adoption forums that I have been trolling on lately. One lady(I assume) was talking about how she was frustrated with the domestic adoption process and even had to give a baby back already once because the B/M came back into the picture. This was of course one the main reasons we opted not to be involved in a domestic adoption. Anyway, she was looking for advice about whether she should switch to an international adoption.

One of the main differences in agency domestic adoptions and international adoptions is that domestically you generally are matched with the baby, by the mother, who chooses your family and you get the baby immediately. All you miss is the pregnancy. For an international adoption, you miss about the first year of the child’s life. I have been giving that a lot of thought lately.

So anyway, one of the people that responded talked about her experience when she adopted her daughter from China. I am just going to quote the comment since it was so good.

Our daughter was 11 and half months at referral and 13 and half at gotcha. Her first birthday was between referral and travel. That was difficult for me. Somehow, her first birthday seemed so symbolic. At the core of my fears, I worried that my daughter would be very independent. I worried that I’d miss out on that baby experience because a 12 month old would be less cuddly. I also worried how spending more time in the orphanage would impact on her.

Well, my daughter has been home 9 months and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the whole experience. As far as missing out on the baby experience, there is soooo much baby left in these girls. My daughter was like a sponge when she came home. She couldn’t get enough closeness, holding, snuggling, rocking etc–and I was more than happy to meet those needs. Even at 14 months, she was very much a like a 6-9 month old baby. Not to scare, you she was alert, interactive, social etc. I definitely have had the opportunity to parent a young baby, baby/toddler mix and now 100% pure toddler (and she’s still extremely sweet and cuddly). As far as attachment, it’s so hard to predict how each child will respond. However, it’s not so simple as younger child guarantees easier process. We were very fortunate as our daughter has attached very well to us.

I realize of course that our experience might be completely different, but it nice to know that it has worked out positively on that front for others out there.

Reading through the contracts and the expectation sheet and the requirements tonight, I was thinking “it is more then a decision now”, it is a process. We are moving forward towards being parents. It is scary and exciting all rolled into one.

I imagine that people who find out that they are pregnant go through this, in a different way, and feel the same sense of reality smash into them every so often. We go through our day, and we talk about the adoption a lot, what we need to do and where we need to be by such and such date, where we are going to get the money for this or that, but the idea of being a parent only crops up every now and then, right now.

Today I was talking to a friend of mine about computers, since my company just replaced my desktop with a SWEET new G5 ( you can read about that on my personal blog). Basically, I was telling her that I hoped that this would last me about 4 or 5 years, and she made the comment “about that time your daughter will be getting ready for kindergarten”. Wow! That statement hit me upside the head. :-o

It is alright though, that is at least 5 years from now….

Application Mailed

Friday, August 12th, 2005

This is a milestone day… There will be many more, but because this is the first milestone, we will hold this one close to our heart. There was no fanfare, no celebration, no nothing. Just slipped the envelope into the mailbox. Milestone acheived.
